“Enjoy The Party but Leave By Nine” is the phrase on the doormat we gave Marie and Dave Underdown last year as a tongue-in-cheek gift for hosting our annual “Dog & Cat Days of Summer House Party” to benefit SPCA*PETS*SNAP of Montgomery County.
House rules did nothing to squash the fun of the evening on Saturday, June 6, as the singing and good times continued during tear down and load out after our best event ever.
Forty-plus guests filled the Underdown abode with thousands of dollars of supplies for the organization’s rescue/foster pantry for another year. Beyond that, $500.00 seemed to be our magic number Saturday. Our themed raffle – which featured everything from a whimsical highland cow painting to kitten print pillow covers – brought in $500. Two silent auction items donated by Marie and Dave brought in $500.00 and were matched by a donation from our new “My Pink Flamingo” Charity Fund. $1500.00 will be donated to The SPCA, our largest donation ever.
The evening wasn’t just about charity though. The “purpose” part of our PH mantra “Party With A Purpose” most certainly had the “party” element too. The Karaoke began with Marie and Jim Jordan at the microphone to sing Brown Eyed Girl – always a crowd pleaser. The ladies ruled the night with some standout voices and great dance moves. Our thanks to all who attended, donated and partied with us. A big shout out to Joe James who helped Richard Beck and Michael McBride at the DJ board. And of course, we thank Marie and Dave for allowing us to take over their home for a few hours to do this work for Marie’s favorite charity.
Speaking of our Jammin’ DJs Richard and Michael, they had a very busy Saturday. They started the day in Houston at the annual CarePartners Senior Prom for some wonderful folks dealing with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The Prom was a 50’s themed affair and wow, everyone really climbed aboard with some fabulous prom attire.
The guys played lots of Elvis and many requested songs. We looked out on a dance floor filled with some cool moves too. More than one spouse came up to say “for a few minutes, we were back there”. We know music activates that muscle memory process in the brain and can bring a spark of remembrance to those suffering with The Long Goodbye, even if just for a precious few moments. It was an amazing thing to witness and renewed our commitment to do all we can to #ENDALZ.
Phlock Phamily News – Congrats to 5OCP member Sherry Bogus, who was the recipient of The Rotary District 5910 Roll of Fame Award last week. We send our condolences to the family of Tony Westlake, who sailed on last week. Tony was not a member of our club but was a close friend to many of us. He served with us in The Rotary Club of Lake Conroe for many years and was on the committee that brought Memory Park into existence. Godspeed Tony.
