Purple Haze? Purple Rain? Purple People Eater? Famous songs, one and all, but not the purple that’s on our minds this month. For our 5 O’Clock Phlock Parrot Head Club, purple is the color of remembrance. It drives us to do more as we count down the days to our annual FUNraiser for The Woodlands Walk To End Alzheimer’s. Our goal? To change the color pallet of the famous Alzheimer’s Promise Garden from purple, blue, orange and yellow to a field of glorious white.

The Promise Garden is a “mission focuses experience” that is a central feature of each Walk To End Alzheimer’s around the country. The garden is a show of solidarity with every person touched by all forms of dementia, of which Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent. The large expanse of the vibrantly colored spinner flowers, whirling in the breezes of the early morning walks, are a beautiful but heartbreaking reminder of the scope of dementia – too too many blue for those who have some form of the disease, yellow for caregivers, orange for supporters and the purple for remembrance of those we have loved and lost. As baby boomers age, the field is growing as more of us are touched by The Long Goodbye.

Missing is the white flower, the color of the first survivor. Through the work of thousands of dedicated medical professionals and researchers, we hope – and pray and believe – that soon the white flower will bloom there too; until then, it is our color of hope.

Saturday night, September 20th we will host our annual FUNraiser to support our Woodlands ALZ Walk Team. We will create our own Promise Garden upstairs at GuadalaHarry’s in downtown Conroe, 219 Simonton. The event is open to the public. If our efforts speak to your heart, please join us. Tickets are 50.00 and include a bountiful fajita buffet and a night of serious fun to fight a serious disease. Proceeds from our raffle, auction and Mini Mart Store will be donated to the Woodlands Walk To End Alzheimer’s.
