“The American Revolution” is a six-part series starting Sunday, Nov. 16, on PBS.

This documentary produced by Ken Burns and others reviews the reasons for the break by the Thirteen British Colonies from Great Britain. Who would have thought these Thirteen disorganized, ill-supplied, arguing Colonies with huge differences of opinion could beat the greatest, best supplied, organized military power during the time of the American revolt.

The physical violent revolt started with the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. On June 19, 1775 during the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Colonists found out how hard it was to fight, especially when you run out of black powder and lead bullets. This was a time of Families being torn apart with allegiances toward the British Crown and local governance. The ill-prepared Colonies tried their best to outlast Great Britain. Only with the aid of France and George Washington’s ability to escape the British many times were the Thirteen Colonies able to win. That aid almost bankrupt the French Treasury.

I hope you will watch this PBS Documentary Series and learn about the grit of our ancestors and their determination to be free of the controls and taxes of the British Crown. Take a trip to your Library and check out books on that revolt of 250 years ago to find out why it took over a year to declare our Freedom.
