This week, Lions remembered in their prayers Life Member Jonathan Thornberry, a Lion since 1981 who passed away last week. We also prayed for the return to good health of Lion Ladoris Cates—we missed her beautiful voice this week!
Lion John Hafley announced the selection of this year’s CNLC Hometown Military Hero: Navy Corpman Kailyn Harrison. Although her family lives in Conroe, she is in the Navy stationed at the Souda Bay Naval Facility in Crete, Greece. She is on the watch for our nation, and we couldn’t be more grateful to her and her family. Thank you, Kailyn!
Lion Connie Engle reports that her committee has conducted more than three hundred vision screenings for preschoolers this school year and has made referrals for more than thirty children who may need help with their vision. Continuing with this service, Conroe Noon Lions will be holding another one of its many free adult vision screenings on Monday, Nov. 17th from 1:00-3:00 p.m., at the Community Assistance Center in Conroe to assist those in need with vision care.
Lion Steve Wohlschlaeger gave an update on the Fall Membership Drive. He called on Lion Charlie Irvine’s team (a.k.a. Longhorns) who bragged they now have the lead on new member sign-ups this week. Lion Rich Sproba responded that his team (a.k.a. Aggies) was leading last week and will regain the lead soon! If you want to join our wonderful club, contact Steve, Charlie, Rich, or any Lion to get in on the action and join a team. You’ll be glad you did.
The highlight of this week’s meeting was the presentation by three outstanding high school students who recited their winning essays from the annual Diabetes Essay Contest about adolescents living with diabetes. The first-place winner was Max Wolf who was awarded a $3,000 scholarship toward his college education. The second-place winner was Daveena Moronkeji, third place went to Emily Rice both receiving a $1,500 scholarship. The winner will go on to compete in a Lion’s District competition to try to advance to the State competition. The students described how fellow students with diabetes live a complicated and difficult daily life from waking until sleeping. They must have their blood sugar levels checked up to ten times per day and take insulin to bring it down, or carbohydrates to bring it up. That means shots with needles or eating snacks—sometimes in class. They praised the new technology of glucose monitor/pumps that monitor sugar levels and deliver insulin as needed by a device attached to their body. They described research being done involving, among other things, gene therapy that will ease the treatment regimen and may lead to a cure in the future. These essayists encouraged all to try to understand and provide support for juvenile diabetics and make them feel loved and accepted wherever you find them. Congratulations, students!
