As the temperatures outside are cooling off, the Conroe Noon Lions Club weekly meetings are heating up with record attendance and multiple service projects coming up. Lions were hard at work on their first Service Saturday project Jan. 17 where they made much-needed repairs to a family’s home. The first vision screening of the year for adults is today, Jan. 19, at the Community Assistance Center.

If you are an individual in need please reach out to CAC for more information at 936-494-4402.  The district will be hosting their Zone meeting at Rudy’s BBQ in Conroe on January 20th with guest speaker Sean Meyers discussing leadership. Club members will be visiting Reaves Elementary on January 22nd during lunch to treat 128 students who have made the rewards club for the last 9 weeks. These kids excelled as they had to make sure to behave before Christmas break, which if you can remember is a very hard task!

The Winter Blood Drive will be coming up on Jan. 28 from 10-4pm at the Lone Star Convention Center. Anyone can donate blood during this event, not just Lions, so please reach out to the club for more information. Save the Date!! The ‘Travel.ROAR.Explore” – Dinner/Dance & Auction Gala is coming up February 26, 2026. Tickets will be on sale soon at the club office so you can Travel along with us as we fundraise for our community outreach for this year. Big shout out to our Community Partners of the Week – Chase Pest Control & Conroe’s Incredible Pizza Company!

Lions had a hard task this week as we had 3 deserving finalists compete in our Annual Drug Awareness Speech Contest. These individuals all received a $1,500 scholarship and competed for the chance to advance to the district competition to earn an additional scholarship. The students only had a few days to memorize their speeches to present an audience of over 100 Lions. The topic chosen from the district this year was to discuss the impact of weight loss drugs among adolescents.

The topic was shocking as most media outlets have only been discussing adults using the product, not that children also can have access to the drugs. The contestants all explained how social media is now introducing adolescents into weight loss drugs to improve their body image insecurities. This unfortunately can have a detrimental impact as children grow with less bone growth, mood changes, and lack of nutrition from foods as the children are eating less. The weight loss drugs are also not teaching the adolescents about future healthcare and how to live a balanced life. Contestant #2 brought up a beneficial use of weight loss drugs in adolescents as it has been assisting patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

This syndrome causes weight gain and other symptoms, which as an adolescent most times leads to bullying. The contestants all agreed that even though there can be a positive side for medical treatment many adolescents are using these drugs for a better body image. All contestants advocated for society to help lead youth to a positive body image. Thank you to all finalists, Thomas Diggs, Valerie Lopez, and Cecilia Lopez for your participation in the contest and bravery to make your speech!
