Each day, more than 1,000 blood donations are needed to support patients across the Gulf Coast region, including those undergoing cancer treatment and those in need of emergency surgeries or trauma care. This demand never slows, even as donations decrease during the summer months.
Gulf Coast Blood serves more than 170 hospitals and health care facilities across a 26‑county region, ensuring blood is available when it is needed most. During the summer, that mission can become even more challenging. Many organizations that regularly host blood drives, such as schools, are not in session, and families are often traveling or out of their usual routines.
Those shifts lead to fewer donations, but the need remains constant.
“Lives today are predicated on who donated blood yesterday,” said Kevin Shipley, Associate Vice President of Community Engagement. “The need for blood never stops. Cancer treatments are still needed; people are still having surgeries, and people are still having accidents, so we have to find out how to get 1,000 donations every day.”
One donation, three lives saved
Blood donation is uniquely impactful because each donation can be separated into multiple components, each helping different patients:
- Red blood cells: carry oxygen and are often used for trauma patients or those who have lost blood
- Platelets: help blood clot and are critical for cancer patients undergoing treatment
- Plasma: the fluid portion of blood, frequently used for burn victims and patients requiring rapid transfusions
“Each of our blood components is used for different causes. That’s why, when you donate blood, you can save up to three lives and have a profound impact,” Shipley said.
Maintaining a strong and diverse blood supply depends on donors of all types. Every donation helps ensure hospitals are prepared for any situation and for any patient.
A simple process with a lasting impact

- Complete a brief health screening and mini-physical upon arrival

- Rest briefly afterward, with snacks and refreshments
The entire visit lasts about an hour.
After donation, each unit of blood undergoes extensive testing in a specialized lab to ensure it is safe for patients. Then, it is carefully processed, labeled and distributed to hospitals, where teams monitor supply levels and deliver blood as needed, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Because blood is perishable, this coordination is critical to ensuring that every donation is used effectively and reaches patients in time.

Shipley shared the story of a local boy named Josh Abbott, who was diagnosed with cancer after experiencing persistent leg pain. During his treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital, he relied on multiple blood transfusions. Abbott completed treatment, ringing the bell, but has since returned for additional care following a relapse—once again depending on the availability of donated blood.
Stories like Abbott’s highlight the ongoing, real-life impact of every donation.
