Grand Parkway project moves forward with $1.4B contract
The Texas Transportation Commission awarded a $1.4 billion contract to Ferrovial Construction-Webber 99 for design-build and capital maintenance services for the State Hwy. 99 Grand Parkway Segment B-1 project on April 30.
Grand Parkway Segment B-1 extends 15 miles, from south of FM Road 2403 to FM 626 in Brazoria and Galveston counties.
This portion of the Grand Parkway loop is designated as a toll project on the state highway system and is being developed by TxDOT under a market valuation waiver agreement executed in March 2009, according to an April 30 release.
Contract execution is anticipated in summer 2026, with project completion anticipated by 2032, according to the release.

Sugar Land launches ticket reservations for FIFA World Cup watch parties
The city of Sugar Land has launched free ticket reservations for its 2026 FIFA World Cup viewing parties at Sugar Land Town Square.
The eight parties are a part of the city’s role as an official Host City Supporter as the city of Houston hosts seven 2026 FIFA World Cup matches in June and July.
The events will take place at 2711 Plaza Drive and will feature an outdoor viewing screen, international food vendors and family-friendly activities.

Triten Real Estate Partners completes 400K-square-foot distribution center in Humble
Triten Real Estate Partners has completed construction on a new development bringing nearly 400,000 square feet of distribution space to Humble, officials with the developer announced in a May 6 news release.
Per the release, the campus supports both single- and multi-tenant occupancy and is geared toward logistics providers, distributors and end-users. The Class A distribution development features:
- Two buildings
- 36-foot clear heights
- An ample dock-door count, as well as trailer and vehicle parking
- Roughly 9,000 square feet of Class A office space
- Potential for more than 5 acres of secured outdoor storage

Friendswood awards $8.6M contract for Blackhawk Boulevard improvements
Friendswood City Council voted unanimously at its May 4 meeting to award an $8.6 million contract to Houston-based Reytec Construction Resources for the Blackhawk Boulevard Reconstruction Phase II-C Project.
The project’s second phase includes full roadway reconstruction, storm sewer improvements, waterline installation and associated infrastructure upgrades, according to city documents.
The Harris County Precinct 2 Partnership Project, streets improvement fund, water and sewer working capital and water and sewer bonds will fund the project.

From her grandmother’s garden to Houston storefronts, Bree Clarke grows something bigger than plants
Bree Clarke, founder of The Plant Project, learned everything she knows from gardening with her grandmother and mother, yet she was the first one to open her own plant shop after realizing there were no Black-owned plant stores in Houston.
Back when her grandmother lived in the 1940s, Clarke said it wasn’t common for women to have the societal support to open their own businesses. However, she feels like her mother and grandmother planted the seeds that got her to where she is today.
“I feel like our generation is the one that breaks those generational curses and cycles,” Clarke said.
Rooted in diversity, culture and community, The Plant Project features indoor plants that range from $4 to $400 as well as workshops and free community events.
