When individuals or families face hardship, the challenges rarely come one at a time.
A sudden job loss can lead to housing instability; health issues can disrupt employment, and financial strain can affect mental well-being.
For over 40 years, Northwest Assistance Ministries has worked to address those interconnected needs across Northwest Houston through a wide network of support programs.
“Our mission is to create a healthy, connected community where all neighbors have the opportunity to reach their God-given potential and achieve stability, wellness and purpose,” chief development and communications officer Rachael Wright said.
Real stories behind the services
The impact of NAM’s programs is best understood through the people they serve.
For example, a single father who lost his apartment and belongings during Hurricane Beryl was rebuilding his life with his two young sons. When reduced work hours left him unable to keep up with rent, NAM provided rental assistance, helping the family remain in their home.
Another example comes from the organization’s Meals on Wheels program. A senior living alone with her cat and dog has physical ailments that make it difficult for her to stand long enough to cook. Daily meal deliveries now provide both food and an important point of connection.
Stories like these reflect the wide range of needs NAM addresses throughout the community.
What programs do they offer?
Rather than focusing on a single issue, NAM offers a variety of programs that work together to help clients regain stability and move forward.
Programs include:
- Client Services: assistance with meeting basic needs such as rent, utilities and more
- Joanne Watford Nutrition Center: groceries and food distribution for families facing food insecurity (new NAM garden now open, providing fresh food)
- Behavioral Health Services: counseling and therapy for children, adults and families
- Housing Services: support for individuals experiencing, or at risk of homelessness
- Veteran Services: housing and basic-needs support for veterans
- Family Violence Center: advocacy, counseling and a 24/7 crisis hotline
- Meals on Wheels: daily meal delivery for homebound seniors and disabled residents
- Young at Heart Senior Center: meals, wellness activities and social programs for seniors
- Opportunity Center: job training, financial education, General Educational Development (GED) and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
Together, these programs allow staff members to identify needs and connect clients with resources to support them for their future.
“What’s most impactful about what NAM does is that we meet people where they are, and we walk alongside them to reach their next step in life,” Wright said.
Impact by the numbers
In 2024 alone, NAM’s programs reached thousands of individuals across Northwest Houston.
Key impact highlights include:
- 259,018 meals delivered through Meals on Wheels
- More than 400 family violence survivors brought to safety
- Nearly 1 million pounds of food distributed to families facing food insecurities
- 50,000 volunteer hours contributed by community members
A resale shop that supports the mission
In addition to its service programs, NAM operates a large resale store that helps fund its work.
Donated clothing, furniture and household items are sold in the store, with proceeds supporting NAM’s programs. The shop also provides community members with an affordable place to find gently used goods.
How to get involved
Community support plays a key role in sustaining NAM’s services. Residents can get involved in several meaningful ways:
- Volunteer with Meals on Wheels
- Donate clothing, furniture and household goods to the resale shop
- Volunteer with programs such as the nutrition center or garden
- Host hygiene product and food drives
- Support the organization financially through donations or shopping at the resale store
Through its network of programs, volunteers and community partnerships, NAM continues working toward its goal of helping neighbors navigate crises and build lasting stability.
