A man faces charges for falsely reporting a student had a gun at Conroe High School, triggering a large emergency response to avoid a traffic citation.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — A man is facing charges after authorities say he falsely reported a student had a gun at Conroe High School in an attempt to avoid a traffic citation, prompting a large law enforcement response Monday morning.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies with the Traffic Division were conducting a high-visibility enforcement operation on FM 830 in the Willis area when they stopped a driver for speeding in a school zone.
During the stop, the driver told deputies he was speeding because a student at Conroe High School had a firearm and was involved in an altercation with his son.
Deputies immediately responded to the campus to investigate, joined by Conroe ISD Police, Montgomery County constables from Precincts 1 and 2, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Conroe Fire and Montgomery County Hospital District.
Authorities said the school was quickly secured and the student mentioned was located. Investigators determined the child was safe, no firearm was ever displayed and no altercation had taken place.
Officials said the claim was false and made in an attempt to avoid receiving a citation. The driver was arrested and charged with making a false report that prompted an emergency response. Deputies also discovered the man had two outstanding felony warrants.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that all reports involving potential weapons on school campuses are taken seriously and investigated immediately to ensure student and staff safety.
At the same time, officials warned that false reports carry serious consequences.
“A false report of a firearm in a school classroom is a criminal offense under Texas law,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Such reports divert critical law enforcement resources, disrupt the learning environment and create real fear and trauma for students and staff.”
