The dedication of the Montgomery County Historical Marker for Mittie J Campbell took place at the new Mittie J Campbell Elementary School in the Evergreen Subdivision Oct. 30. The marker was established through a program from the Montgomery County Historical Commission.
Following this Conroe ISD had their dedication program for the school. There was a great turnout by the teachers and staff at the school, CISD Superintendent David Vinson, the Shea Homes staff (the school is in the Evergreen Community being developed by Shea Homes), the Montgomery County Historical Commission led by Larry Foerster, the Conroe Community Cemetery Restoration Project Board and two family members of Mittie, including Myron Washington a grand nephew and his daughter Tramikia Davis.
The CISD Program included the unveiling of a portrait of Mittie J Campbell done by a CISD high school student. Campbell is buried in the Conroe Community Cemetery on 10th Street. Over the past 10-plus years, volunteers have led a cleanup and restoration of the historic cemetery.
Campbell was the first Black principal of a Conroe school in the early 1900s.
The effort to get a school named for Mittie J Campbell again was one of the main goals for the Conroe Community Cemetery Restoration Project.
While it’s great to see the cemetery cleaned up, the most important aspect of the project was to research, educate and celebrate the accomplishments of forgotten African Americans who played a key role in the development of Conroe and Montgomery County.
