Prosecutors say Zachary David Johnson, 23, often attended children’s athletic events where he used his physical disability to gain sympathy and trust.
CONROE, Texas — A Montgomery County man who liked to hang out at children’s athletic events to befriend young boys is going to prison for possession of child pornography.
A jury slapped Zachary David Johnson, 23, with a 24-year sentence — six years for each of four counts. He must serve each sentence consecutively.
A digital trail revealed disturbing details about Johnson’s obsession with child pornography and his access to children.
Prosecutors say Johnson was active in the local sports community, and he used his physical disabilities and mobility issues to gain sympathy and trust from children and parents.
“This defendant’s conduct was predatory and deliberate. He collected hundreds of images and videos of child sexual abuse and used his disability to exploit access to children,” Montgomery County District Attorney Michael Holley said. “These crimes often hide in plain sight, making vigilance from parents, schools, and communities essential.”
The investigation began when the Montgomery County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office received 16 cyber tips from media platforms regarding a user storing child sexual abuse material.
A Precinct 2 detective traced the accounts to Johnson. When she initiated an undercover conversation with him, Johnson sent four videos of child pornography.
Investigators also found evidence that Johnson had engaged in sexually explicit conversations with other minors.
A forensic examination of Johnson’s phone uncovered hundreds of additional images and videos of child sexual abuse material, some depicting victims as young as 18 months old, prosecutors said.
“This case is a reminder that predators can come in many forms, even those who appear vulnerable themselves,” Assistant District Attorney Frances Manzo said. “This defendant used his medical condition to gain access to children and then exploited that trust.”
After a jury was selected for his trial, Johnson pleaded guilty to all four counts. He was sentenced following testimony in the punishment phase.
