The Mary Vaughan Corner Chapter, NSDAR officially established on June 24, 2025, in Montgomery, Texas. We are honored to be a newly established chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Our chapter’s journey began with a celebration we will never forget! During our Organizing Celebration in August 2025, we had the privilege of welcoming three descendants of our namesake, sisters descending from Mary’s first daughter – Phebe. Their presence brought history to life and added a deep personal connection to our organizing event. Their support continues to inspire us as we work to uphold the values of NSDAR with dedication, purpose, and pride.
We are proud to honor the life and legacy of Mary Vaughan Corner, a pioneering woman whose courage and determination helped shape early Texas.
In 1825, Stephen F. Austin received a contract for his Second Colony, laying the groundwork for what would become Lake Creek Settlement, later known as Montgomery, Texas. While the contract was issued in 1825, the first settlers did not arrive until 1831, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Texas history.
Mary’s own journey began around 1775 in the Carolinas. She is believed to be the daughter of Evan and Phebe Vaughan, who later lived in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Around 1791, she married William Corner, likely in South Carolina, and together they raised at least nine children before his passing in 1821.
Mary’s strength and resilience became even more evident as she forged a new life on the Texas frontier. She and most of her children arrived in the Lake Creek Settlement on November 17, 1829. On March 19, 1830, she swore the Oath of Allegiance to Mexico, and on April 7, 1831, she received a league of land (4,428.4 acres), making her the first American woman to receive a land grant in Lake Creek Settlement.
Mary Vaughan Corner’s story is one of perseverance, leadership, and pioneering spirit. Her legacy lives on through our chapter as we strive to preserve history, promote education, and celebrate patriotism within our community.
