Jenny Lehr, President of the Rebel Joan Of Arc 2721 Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, UDC, took her annual trip to Galveston, TX to learn even more about the history of Galveston and the “War of Northern Aggression”. President Lehr visited multiple Civil War sights in the area. She started with the Battle of Galveston and is always eager to learn more about Confederate Texas during the “War Between the States”.
The Battle of Galveston in the American Civil War, fought on January 1, 1863, was a Confederate victory led by General John Bankhead Magruder, resulting in the recapture of the strategic port of Galveston, the only Confederate port not held by the Union for the rest of the war. The Confederates, using makeshift cottonclads and artillery placed in buildings, overwhelmed the unprepared Union naval and land forces, leading to the capture of the Union flagship Harriet Lane and the grounding and destruction of the Westfield, which sank to prevent its capture.
We Congratulate the Great Historic City of Galveston for Honoring and Protecting their History which always intrigues its visitors to this beautiful city!
