The Rotary Club of Conroe had an eventful week with a successful Pancake Supper, hosting an Emmy-winning Documentary Producer in the room adjacent to the reception for the President of Albania, and successful elections for their Interact Clubs.
Honor Café in historic downtown Conroe was host to these events except for the Interact Clubs which meet at Conroe High School and Washington High School. Rotarian Chris Sadler and his wife Mandi are the proud owners for this iconic restaurant which focuses and bestows honor on the members of the U. S. Armed Forces and first responders. The walls of this restaurant-museum honor those who serve us. It is fitting for a Service Organization like the Rotary Club of Conroe to host their weekly noon meetings on Tuesdays at this institution. Last Tuesday’s meetings featured Denton Florian who was the Producer for the documentary on Sam Houston which earned five Emmies!
He reviewed the virtues and values of this Texas icon and compared his values to those of Rotarians. Sam Houston served his communities in a variety of ways, being Governor of both Tennessee and Texas. He was a leader and a giant at 6’-6” among men leading the Texas Army to victory over the Dictator Santa Anna, but he was smart enough to hold Santa Anna prisoner to deter the other Mexican Armies. Sam Houston was President of the Republic of Texas and later held the position of U. S. Senator representing Texas. Sam Houston valued people just as Rotarians acknowledge the value of people. Sam Houston strived for huge goals just as Rotarians strive with huge goals like the eradication of Polio worldwide. We are down to two countries with a small handful of new Polio cases.
The Rotary Club of Conroe held a successful Pancake Supper at the infamous Honor Café last Thursday evening. Myriads of adults and kids devoured thousands of pancakes while being entertained by Celebrity Waiters. Kids had faces painted by Interact Club members while Rotarians and Interact Club Members bussed tables, served pancakes, and told the story of how Rotarians are making our community even better. This pancake fundraiser provided funds for Rotary’s local youth projects like:
• I Me Books distributed to first graders in the school feed program for Conroe High School
• College Scholarships for Graduating Seniors at Conroe High School and Washington High School
• Interact Club Programs at the two high schools in Conroe
• Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) programs
• Sponsorship of various programs at Runyan Elementary School
The success of this fundraiser and other fundraisers that the Rotary Club of Conroe has done over the last 94 years of the Club’s existence has pumped the equivalent of millions of dollars of benefits to enhance the youth of our community through money and tens of thousands of volunteer hours. It’s what Rotarians do! It’s what Rotarians value! It’s what Rotarians believe!
