This Saturday, Rotary Clubs will be ringing the bells for the Salvation Army this Saturday at several locations in Montgomery County. Rotary Club Members and their Families will be ringing and singing from 9 am to 4 pm while encouraging donations to the Salvation Army Kettle either via cash or through scanning and using the QR Code to make a donation. The Salvation Army has a very low overhead with most of its work being done with volunteer help such as cooking and assembling Thanksgiving meals along with giving out those meals. Volunteers are also being used for the Salvation Army’s Angel Reach program where the goal is to assist one thousand Families to have a good Christmas with presents for their little ones. Lt. Amanda and Cody Johns lead the way with their meager salaries of less than one thousand per month plus their living quarters at the Salvation Army facilities in Conroe. The Salvation Army leverages its donations to the fullest. As a result of this leveraged compassion, Rotarians are proud to ring the Salvation Army Bells to make life better for those less fortunate. Please consider to donate lovingly at the Salvation Army Kettle or use their QR Code to make the world a better place!
Rotarians are thankful all year, but especially when the holiday is Thanksgiving. One of the things all should be helpful for is our health. Rotarian Dr. Scott Douglass provided a program last Tuesday to the Rotary Club of Conroe on preventive health practices. Something as simple as handwashing is a meaningful accomplishment in staying healthy. We take such for granted since we have running water in our homes and businesses. Two hundred years ago such handwashing was started in many hospitals with death rates plummeting, according to Dr. Douglass. Other factors such as healthy food intake, having inoculations such as Polio, and getting appropriate exercise impact one’s personal health. Such simple practices can add years to your life. Next Tuesday, RN Sandra Douglass (Scott’s wife) will talk about stroke prevention to the Rotary Club of Conroe. This is NOT about your golf game. It is providing you with information in saving lives and creating a quality of life. A good example is Kristi and Michael McBridge. Kristi recognized that Michael was going through a stroke and followed the recommendations provided to her earlier to save his life. This beautiful couple are a beautiful example of living life at its BEST!
As the year ticks down, the Rotary Clubs are preparing for a weekend leadership retreat for High School Juniors. Rotarian Michael Hayes lived in Louisiana where he headed the RYLA experience. Since he moved to Texas, he has been helped with the Texas experience of this Rotary Youth Leadership Achievement learning experience. This weekend experience is free for selected High School Juniors. Our RYLA Camp in Southeast Texas has the reputation of having all the ice cream you can eat!
