Traditions happen among service organizations like the Rotary Club of Conroe. For many years, Rotarians from this Club cooked pancakes in the evening and had gourmet pancake suppers providing families with food, fun and fellowship.
Moms get a night off with dad’s pocketbook left intact for everyone in the family to get a fun-tastic supper using traditional breakfast food! The Hometown Heroes Pancake Supper is back again for a long run of fun and fund-raising.
This year the Hometown Heroes Pancake Supper will be held at Honor Café in historic downtown Conroe on Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Local celebrity servers will be there to help! Rotarian Chris Sadler and his wife, Mandi, own the Honor Café where veterans and first-responders are honored. The walls of this great restaurant are laden with the history of those in our community and nation who have protected us from wars and local disasters. Perhaps you can find my Father’s picture on the wall as a U. S. Marine or maybe someone you know. If you have a member of your family in the armed forces, provide a picture for the Sadlers to place on the wall to honor your family member.
Conroe Rotarians are selling tickets to raise money to support their endeavors in educating children. Tickets are $25 per adult with children under twelve years old at $10. In addition to the entry ticket cost, there will be Silent Auction Items that you can bid on in competition with your friends to get some items that you, your family and friends could enjoy. Several celebrity waiters will also be on hand as the Rotary Club of Conroe celebrates Hometown Heroes and America 250! Who is your Hometown Hero?
This year we are honored to have the Sons of the American Revolution provide the Color Guard, and the Daughters of the American Revolution will be there in period dress. Do you have a revolutionary war hero among your ancestors?
For the children, there will be a “kids corner” where they can color, do crafts, and hear children’s books read, one by its author! There will also be face painting. Feel free to bring the whole family!
The underlying purposes of this Pancake Supper is multi-fold, being good, clean family fun over a delicious meal while raising funds for the Rotary Projects to help advance our youth. These Programs include:
• “I Like Me” Books provided to all of the first graders who will eventually go to Conroe High School. These books are customized based on input from their teachers, and are personalized for each student. Second-grade teachers tell us that first graders reading over the summer retain their reading status which makes them better second graders.
These hardback books go to just under two thousand first graders each year!
• Speakers at Rotary Meetings received an honorarium book for them to inscribe which is donated to the Runyan Elementary School Library.
• The Rotary Club of Conroe provides a lot of support to faculty, staff, and students at Runyan Elementary School. This school is one of the poorest in Conroe ISD and therefore needs support from the community to provide those at Runyan Elementary School with motivation to excel. Support includes “Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Stock the teacher Lounge,” Teacher Appreciation Week, and more.
Tickets are available from Rotarians and online via the Rotary Club of Conroe website. You can also get tickets by emailing me at rsaikowski@comcast.net so I can get you tickets at “Will Call” at Honor Café! I look forward to seeing you there!
