One way Rotarians serve our local community is toward assisting those families with loved ones who come to Montgomery County for medical help. Outside of the Medical District in Houst, being one of the largest in the world, Montgomery County’s Hospitals consisting of Herman Memorial Hospital, Houston Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Cornerstone Specialty, HCA Hospital, and numerous smaller clinics provide world class medical care for those who don’t want to go into an urban setting.
Families of loved ones normally come to our community and have a very difficult time to afford the living expenses of staying in a “home away from home”. This is where the Rotary House comes into the picture. Families can apply for living accommodations during the medical treatment of their loved ones. These families need to apply for help with such applications reviewed for true need by the Board of Directors for The Rotary House of Montgomery County. This compassionate concept was established by Rotarians such as Julie Martineau from the Rotary Club of The Woodlands. Ms. Martineau was scheduled to update the Rotary Club of Conroe last Tuesday when the six-inch rain flooded The Woodlands making travel almost impossible in South Montgomery County.
True to his servant’s heart, Conroe Rotarian, Leland Dushkin provided the presentation since he is the incoming President of the Board of Directors of the Rotary House of Montgomery County. Rotarians reach out to each other to make things happen to make the world a little bit better and to provide the compassion and empathy to those less fortunate. The Rotary Club of The Woodlands hosts a world-class gala dinner each year honoring those who have helped make the world a better place. In doing so, they have raised the hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund such compassionate actions of love.
Michael Fields of the Rotary Club of Magnolia told me, “On June 13 the Magnolia Rotary Club sponsored a car show in Unity Park in Magnolia. What a great event! There were a reported 60 classic and modified cars at the event along with a great crowd. David Marler who led the event reported, “Everyone said if we do it again to be aware, cause word is out, and expect twice as many attendees next year.” The cars in the car show were a feast for the car enthusiast. From classic Model As to modern Shelby GT-50s, the show was one not to miss. Thanks to all those who participated and look forward to our event next year.”
Deitra Johnson of the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County told me, “The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County welcomed Deborah Saulsbury as the guest speaker at its June 2 luncheon.
Saulsbury shared information about the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County, a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering voters and defending democracy. Founded more than 100 years ago following the women’s suffrage movement of 1920, the League works to encourage informed and active participation in government through voter education, advocacy, community engagement, and outreach.
During her presentation, Saulsbury explained that the League neither supports nor opposes political candidates or parties at any level of government. Instead, the organization focuses on providing factual, evidence-based information and advocating for policies that strengthen democratic participation and informed civic engagement.
