For a lady to be a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, it is an honor
to her Confederate ancestor. The United Daughters of the Confederacy in was organized
in Nashville, Tennessee in 1896. The organization was formed by wives, daughters or the
mother of a Confederate soldier. The Texas Divison, U D C was organizated in Victoria,
Texas on 15 May 1896.
The Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523 Conroe Chapter of the Texas Division, U D C
was chartered 25 October 1986. At the time of chartering our chapter had three (3) real
daughters. What that means is, their father was a member of the Confederacy during
the War Between the States. Many years after this chapter was started, the Stubbs chapter
was honored in finding another real daughter, who joined us in June of 2013.
The objectives of the U D C are Historical, Educational, Benevolent, Memorial and
Patriotic. Our chapter strives eagerly to meet these objectives. Some of the things we
have done during the year were…we have a monthly meeting, September thru May, in
October of 2024, many of the ladies acted as docents at Voices from the Past in
Montgomery in period dress, in November of 2024, member Iva Gilliam traveled to Arkansas
to speak at the Hot Springs Civil War Round Table with former member Renee Mauch,
their talk was titled “John Wilkes Booth: Everything but the Assassination”, December
saw the members preparing for Wreaths Across America by placing flags by every
grave of a veteran of ALL the wars and then a week later, placing a wreath at that grave
site. Later that day many of the ladies in period dress assisted in the Tour of Homes
of the old historic homes in Montgomery.
The new year brought us to celebrate Confederate Heros Day on January 19, 2025,
some of us traveled to Waco and attended Forum on February 1, 2025, on February 8,
2025 we had our annual Literary Tea in Montgomery, the tables were beautifully set
with fine china, in March many traveled to Port Neches for our District III meeting and
a Memorial Service. The Stubbs chapter lost three members this past year, Pat Spackey,
Teri Grimm and Eugenia Letbetter. April is Confederate History Month and several of us
attended an event in Anderson, Texas at the Memorial Plaza.
The picture of the two ladies by the statue are…Renee Mauch (former member of the
Stubbs chapter) but lives in Arkansas now and is a member of the Hot Springs 80
Chapter of the Arkansas Division and is president of that chapter and Iva Gilliam is an
Associate member of the Stubbs chapter. Ms. Gilliam and Ms. Mauch were attending
the annual Jefferson Re-enactment Civil War weekend in Jefferson, Texas, it was from
May 4 thru 4, 2025. Once home Ms. Gilliam attended a event marking all the Confederate
graves that could be found at the Willis Cemetery in Willis, Texas on May 21, 2025.
Members are encouraged to locate historical markers that talks about the Confederacy
in Texas or plaques on an old building that speaks of the War Between the States or find
an old cemetery and locate the Confederate soldier buried there.
