Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523 Conroe Chapter, Texas Division, UDC member, Beckie Endebrock and her husband Don, visited the Fort Davis National Park, in Fort Davis, Texas, the week of February 6, 2026. Fort Davis is located in the Davis Mountains, in the southwest region of Texas. It is a beautiful site, being at an elevation of 4,928 feet. The post was established on October 23, 1854 on the San Antonio/El-Paso Road going thru west Texas and was named in honor of Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis. Mr. Davis, a few years later was named President of the Confederacy and was the only person to hold that honor.
The fort was served by the 8th U.S. Infantry from 1854 until April of 1861. The War between the States started in April of 1861 in Charleston, South Carolina, even in remote west Texas, the War caused division and anguish. With the starting of the War in the Spring of 1861, federal troops withdrew from Fort Davis and regiments of the 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles were stationed at the post. There were ten officers stationed at Fort Davis (including six Southerners) and they accepted commissions with the Confederate Army and twenty-one officers (including two Southerners) remained loyal to the United States. The CSA served at the post for a little over a year and their service was crucial to the supply depot, that administered what was needed by General Henry H. Sibley’s New Mexico campaign.
The New Mexico Campaign was an offensive led by General Sibley to conquer the New Mexico Territory, seize Colorado’s gold fields and secure California ports. Going on from February to April 1862, the Texas based invasion intended to gain control of the Southwest, but was defeated by Union forces at the Battle of Glorieta Pass.
