Conroe Chapter member Eva Rains, traveled to Lufkin, Texas for a funeral and the burial was later in Homer, Texas.
After the burial, Mrs. Rains walked thru the Fielder Cemetery looking for headstones belonging to Confederate veterans. Finding many, she only had the one picture made of William Bird (Byrd) Gilbert, he was with Co. K 4 Louisiana Cavalry, CSA. He was born 23 February 1831 in Mississippi and was married to Sarah Reid on 28 December 1856 in Marion County, Mississippi. They settled in Angelina County, Texas, Gilbert died on 7 November 1914.
There were men who mustered in at San Augustine, Texas (about 40 miles east of Lufkin, in May of 1862) that were from the Lufkin and Homer area, this regiment was the 19th Texas Infantry.
The Fielder Cemetery was established on 1867, with the first burial of Mary E. Fielder at the age of 33. Her husband, William R. Fielder, owned the land and the cemetery was given the name Fielder.
The community of Homer was founded around 1846 and was the 3rd County seat in Angelina County, from 1858 to 1890.
The Stubbs chapter is in the Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Members are encouraged to seek out Confederate grave sites and record where they were found and get as much information about them.
