In celebration of Independence Day and America’s 250th Anniversary, The Players Theatre Company proudly presents a special limited-engagement production of 1776, the Tony Award-winning musical that brings the signing of the Declaration of Independence to vivid life through stirring music, sharp wit, and compelling drama.
Performances will take place at The Owen Theatre, 225 Metcalf St. in downtown Conroe, Texas.

Written by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards, 1776 transports audiences to Philadelphia in the summer of 1776, where delegates from the thirteen colonies struggle to overcome political differences and personal rivalries in pursuit of a bold and unprecedented goal: independence from Great Britain.
Adding a unique element to the production, each performance will feature a special mystery guest performer, including notable members of the community, in the role of The Painter. Audiences can look forward to discovering who will appear and contribute their talents to the production.
Following the June 28 matinee, audience members are invited to stay for a special talkback session with a panel of city and county judges, law enforcement officials, and others who will discuss the historical context of the Declaration of Independence, its impact on American government, and its continuing relevance today.
The patriotic celebration continues following the July 4 matinee with The Players’ Patriotic Patio Picnic. Guests are invited to enjoy hot dogs, chips, drinks, desserts, and fellowship with cast members and fellow theatergoers as America celebrates its birthday.
The cast is large, showcasing the talents 23 men and two women, with Taylor Fisher in the role John Adams, Travis Bryant as Benjamin Franklin, Austin Atherton as Thomas Jefferson, with Bonnie Atkinson in the role of Abigail Adams and Julia Massey as Martha Jefferson.
“1776 is more than a history lesson,” said director Casey Burden, who also serves as The Players’ Artistic Director. “It is a story about people with differing viewpoints finding the courage to debate, compromise, and ultimately unite around a vision larger than themselves. As we approach this 250th Independence Day, it feels especially meaningful to revisit the ideals and sacrifices that shaped our nation.”
Whether audiences are longtime fans of the beloved musical or discovering it for the first time, 1776 offers an entertaining and thought-provoking look at one of the most pivotal moments in American history.

The Players Theatre Company began in 1967 as The Little Theatre of Conroe utilizing the Conroe High School stage and later a refurbished plumbing supply store at the corner of Galveston and Robertson Streets. After helping to restore the historic Crighton Theatre in 1979, the group produced shows there for nearly 30 years as The Crighton Players. In 2008, in partnership with the City of Conroe, The Players Theatre Company was formed and moved to their current residence at The Owen Theatre.
